Grays Roll On: Busy June Begins with Old Dutch Day

Providence enjoyed a split twin bill with Westfield on May 18th

VILLAGE OF THE BRANCH, N.Y. -- The first month-and-a-half of the 2024 campaign has concluded for the Providence Grays, who open a busy June schedule this afternoon, June 1, against the Brooklyn Atlantic in Smithtown, N.Y.
Providence travels to the Smithtown Historical Society in the Village of the Branch to join Brooklyn in celebrating Old Dutch Day, an event that honors the legacy of Al “Old Dutch” Dieckmann, a major contributor to the emergence of historically accurate 19th century play whose spirit lives on in the clubs that take the field today.

The Grays wrapped up their May slate on the 18th, splitting a doubleheader with the Westfield Wheelmen at the Hilltop Farm in Suffield, Conn. Westfield took the 1886 contest, 21-3, and Providence triumphed 26-14 in the 1864 game, as the Rhode Islanders are now 4-6 on the year.

Today’s outing begins a stretch of 12 games in June for the Grays, who look to build momentum heading into the peak of the campaign at the Gettysburg National 19th Century Base Ball Festival in July.

Brooklyn serves as a familiar and friendly foe for Providence, always providing a challenge as the Atlantic took last season’s series 3-1. The sides split their four games in 2022 and follow the usual schedule this year, meeting for Old Dutch Day and the season finale in October.
