First Festival of 2024 Beckons for Providence

SUFFIELD, Conn. -- The Providence Grays vintage base ball club is set for inter-New England action in its next outing at the Wheelmen Spring Festival, hosted by the Westfield Wheelmen, at the Hilltop Farm in Suffield, Conn. on Saturday, June 8, and Sunday, June 9, 2024.

Last time out, the Grays dropped both ends of an 1864/84 doubleheader against the Brooklyn Atlantics in celebration of Old Dutch Day on Saturday, June 1, at Long Island's Smithtown Historical Society. Providence fell twice against its age-old rivals from the Empire State, keeping things competitive despite falling to 4-8 on the season.

In continuation of one of the Northeast's pre-eminent base ball rivalries, Brooklyn scraped by with an early advantage in the opener which proved to be enough in a hotly-contested underhand matchup. The hosts then jumped out to an edge in the '84 game, giving them enough separation to earn a sweep on the day.

The Grays open Westfield's 1864-rules festival on Saturday (June 8) against familiar foes in the Mudville BBC, before taking the pitch against the Saugerties BBC of Upstate, N.Y., to conclude the event's opening day.

A marquee twin-bill highlights Providence's second day in Suffield, featuring a 10:00am, 1864 contest versus the venerable Connecticut Hartfords, before concluding the weekend with a 12-noon showdown against the hefty-hitting Mountain Athletic Club.
