Grays Head to Gettysburg for Festival Action
GETTYSBURG, Pa. — Fresh off an 1884 victory-in Hartford last Sunday, the
Providence Grays (9 – 6 on the season) head to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
this weekend for one of the most anticipated gatherings on the historic base
ball calendar: the Gettysburg National 19th Century Base Ball Festival. Held
July 19 and 20 on the grounds of the Schroeder Farm, the festival welcomes clubs
from across the nation in celebration of the game's 19th-century simplicity –
1864 rules, no gloves, no problem.
The Grays are slated for four contests against four
out-of-state opponents—three of whom they’ll meet for the first time.
Saturday's slate begins at 11:30 a.m. with a matchup against Ohio’s Canal Dover Redlegs, followed by a 1:15 p.m. contest versus our friends from the Lewes BBC
of Delaware. Sunday gets underway bright and early, as the Rhode Islanders face
the Emmett Machinists of Knoxville, Tennessee, at 8 a.m., before wrapping up
festival play against the Regular BBC of Mt. Clemens, Michigan, at 9:30 a.m.
Providence posted a 2 – 2 record at last year’s festival and
stands 11 – 7 over their last five Gettysburg festival appearances. They'll
look to build on that legacy while navigating a fresh slate of challengers.
Follow along throughout the weekend on the Grays’ Facebook and Instagram pages for photos, updates, and historic base ball moments from
the fields of Gettysburg.
