EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence Grays (1 – 1) are back in action today (Saturday, April 27) as they gear up to face off against the Game Hens at Providence Country Day School in an 1886/1884 doubleheader. First pitch is 1 P.M.

The Grays launched the 2024 season last Saturday with a ‘64/’84 twin bill against the Westfield Wheelmen at Rocky Point Park. The bats at the top of the order carried the day in game one (1864), with Dave “Lightnin’ Legs” Leopardi, Captain Brian Travers, Michel “Banquet” Taylor, and Jay Gildea all recording multiple hits and tallies. The offense was highlighted by a triple off the bat of Travers.

The Wheelmen kept it interesting, but the Grays' defense behind Jon “Bones” Henson between the pitching lines proved resilient against the Westfield lumber. The Providence offense down the line sealed the deal with six runs in the fifth inning and, after holding off a strong Westfield rally in the final frame, Providence emerged victorious in the first game of the season, 20 to 16.

In game two, fortune did not smile so broadly on the Rhode Islanders, as the bats never fully came to life. The final score of 11 to 3 in the Wheelmen's favor doesn't reflect the close score through most of the innings. Providence trailed throughout but kept it close, with Jay Gildea exhibiting a solid season opening start in the overhand box.
