Grays Launch 2024 Campaign with Wheelmen at Rocky Point

WARWICK NECK, R.I. - Get ready, Grays family! The much-anticipated 2024 season of the Providence club commences this Saturday, April 20th, at Rocky Point Park in Warwick, Rhode Island. The Grays will go head-to-head against the formidable Westfield Wheelmen in a thrilling 1864/1884 doubleheader, with the first pitch scheduled for 11 AM.

Last season saw the Wheelmen clinch victories in both encounters against the Grays. However, seasoned fans will recall that Providence claims an impressive record against Westfield, having emerged victorious in 9 out of their last 14 matchups dating back to 2018. As the Grays take to the field, the anticipation is palpable – will they reclaim their former glory, or will the Wheelmen extend their winning streak?

Beyond the competition, what truly sets this matchup apart is the undeniable camaraderie between the two teams. Over the seasons, a mutual respect has blossomed, evident in the spirited yet friendly rivalry that unfolds on the field. Both the Grays and the Wheelmen embody the essence of historic baseball, playing with an authenticity and passion that exemplifies the spirit of the National Association of Historic Base Ball Clubs.

This opening day showdown is just the beginning of what promises to be an action-packed season for the Grays. With 49 exhilarating games on the docket, the 2024 season promises to be a veritable carnival of base ball delights.

On April 27th, the Grays will face off against the Providence Game Hens at the Providence Country Day School in East Providence. This matchup will be followed by a journey to Rockland Memorial Stadium in Rockland, Massachusetts, on May 5th, where the Rockinghams of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, will join us in marking Rockland's 150th Town Celebration.

But the fun doesn't stop there. On May 11th, the Grays will venture north to Maine to take on the Dirigo BBC in what promises to be a thrilling matchup. Then, on May 18th, we travel to Hilltop Farm in Sudbury, Massachusetts, for another doubleheader against the Westfield Wheelmen.

As June rolls around, we'll be visiting the Atlantic BBC of Brooklyn at the Smithtown Historical Society in Smithtown, New York, on June 1st for Old Dutch Day. This will be followed by the Wheelmen Spring Festival back at the Hilltop Farm on June 8th and 9th.

The excitement continues throughout the summer months with events such as the Bristol Fourth of July Committee Event in Bristol, Rhode Island, on June 15th with Lisbon, and the Elizabeth Resolutes 25th Anniversary Festival in Rahway River Park, New Jersey, on June 29th and 30th.

As we look ahead to the dog days of summer, we'll be making our way to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, for the National 19th Century Base Ball Festival on July 20th and 21st. Then, on July 27th, we'll be back on New England soil for Base Ball at the Beach against the Connecticut Base Ball Club in Hull, Massachusetts.

The action doesn't stop there, with events such as the Doc Adams Base Ball Festival at the Old Bethpage Village Restoration in New York on August 3rd and 4th (hosted by the New York Mutuals), our own Rocky Point Historic Base Ball Festival in Warwick, Rhode Island, on August 17th and 18th, and much more as the season wends its way into Autumn, including a late-season road trip to Bovina Center, New York, for the Cowtown Scramble hosted by the Dairymen.

But it all starts with Opening Day at Rocky Point Park. So, grab your picnic baskets, blankets, and chairs (and maybe an umbrella for the morning), dust off your caps, and join us for a day of base ball bliss. Whether you're a die-hard fan or a newcomer to this era of the grand pastime, there's something for everyone to enjoy as we launch the 2024 season.
