Providence Opens 25th Season This Sunday at Rocky Point
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – In the spring of 1998, club founder Tim Norton inspired a crew of Rhode Island locals to form a tribute to the 1884 Grays after reading a newspaper article about the style of historical base ball played on Long Island at the Old Bethpage Village Restoration. The idea was to recreate the ’84 World Championship by inviting a New York team to a doubleheader on the Bristol Town Common. The Grays lost both of those games, but the Providence squad wanted to keep it going, ultimately playing nine games that first year.
Twenty-five seasons later, the Providence Grays will take the field at Rocky Point Park in Warwick this Sunday, April 10, to face the Thames BBC of New London, celebrating a quarter century of historic base ball in gray wool uniforms and Columbia blue stockings. This season-opening doubleheader (1864/1865) takes place at the ideal venue for 19th century base ball, with sweeping views of Narragansett Bay, plenty of parking, walking paths, and easy access to the shore for exploration between matches. Bring the family and pack your picnic baskets, blankets, and chairs to enjoy an early spring outing, with a bit of history and fierce competition mixed in.
