Providence Welcomes Brooklyn for Season Finale
In their opening duel against the Wheelmen, the Grays demonstrated unyielding resolve but were ultimately outpaced, with the scoreboard favoring Westfield at 20-12. Providence cultivated momentum as the match unfolded, yet their resurgence arrived too late to surmount the seasoned Wheelmen, underscoring the remarkable competition in the Catskills.
The second contest witnessed the Grays engaging in a
riveting clash with the host Bovina Dairymen. The match showcased Providence's
steadfast purpose as they surged to a five-run lead in the opening inning. The
Dairymen, equally resolved, maintained stride with the Grays in a spirited
exchange. However, Bovina's batters ignited, propelling prodigious hits into
the distant outfield rough, securing their victory at 15-6.
Season Finale: Providence vs. Brooklyn
The anticipation builds for the grand finale, set for Saturday, October 14, with the Atlantic of Brooklyn at Rocky Point Park, a hallowed ground for historic base ball. The echoes of history linger in the air, and it's here that the legendary Babe Ruth once graced the diamond with the minor league Providence Grays. In a Sunday exhibition against the Chicago Cubs on September 27, 1914, Ruth pitched the Grays to victory and sent a towering “home run” (ground rule triple) clear over the right-field hill and into the waters of Narragansett Bay on the other side. The following day, Ruth boarded a train for Boston, where he returned to the Red Sox in a nine-inning victory on the mound over the Yankees, walking six but also smacking a double. Rocky Point stands as an iconic location in the annals of baseball history.
As the sun sets on our twenty-sixth season, the Grays extend a warm invitation to enthusiasts.
