Grays Gear Up for Cowtown Showdown

Recapping the Philadelphia Campaign and Previewing the Northeast Gathering in Bovina Center

WARWICK NECK, RI - The Providence Grays, as intrepid travelers, recently embarked on a journey to the City of Brotherly Love (Sept. 9-10). There, amidst the cobblestone streets and under changeable skies, they engaged in a captivating campaign of historic base ball, proving their mettle both in the face of rival clubs as well as capricious weather.

On Saturday, September 9, the Grays (20-13-1) locked horns with the formidable Brandywine BBC from West Chester and the Diamond State BBC of Delaware. Alas, fortune did not favor them that day, and the Rhode Islanders, despite their valiant efforts, found themselves on the less-favored side of the scoreline. Brandywine triumphed with a commanding 31-15 win, and Diamond State secured victory with a score of 22-8.

A change of scenery on Sunday, September 10, led the Grays to a rain-drenched but resolute showdown against the Athletics, just off the Avenue of the Republic near the Smith Memorial Arch in Philadelphia. The elements may have conspired against them, but the spirit of historic base ball burned brightly. Providence and Philadelphia, undeterred by the inclement weather, navigated the raindrops and engaged in two fierce contests. The Grays found their rhythm, securing an 8-2 victory in the first game and capping the day with an impressive 18-10 win in the second.

As the calendar flips to late September, the Grays now turn their gaze toward their final road trip of the season. Their compass points toward Bovina Center, NY, where the eagerly anticipated Cowtown Scramble awaits. This Northeast gathering brings together ten historic base ball clubs from across the region, promising a weekend filled with camaraderie, spirited competition, and the timeless allure of the sport.

The opening day of the Scramble, Saturday, September 30, promises a thrilling doubleheader for Providence. First, the Grays shall meet the Westfield Wheelmen at 1 PM, followed by a lively clash against the host Bovina Dairymen at 3 PM. Both contests shall adhere to the 1864 base ball rules, as these historic clubs unite to celebrate the rich heritage of the game.

While the Grays faced the disappointment of having their games scheduled for September 23 in East Hampton, CT, against the Lisbon Tunnelmen rained out, they remain undaunted. With renewed determination, they look forward to making their mark in the Cowtown Scramble and showcasing their unwavering commitment to the storied legacy of historic base ball.

As the season begins to bid adieu, the Grays anticipate the grand finale, set for Saturday, October 14, at Rocky Point. There, they shall join their brethren from the Atlantic of Brooklyn in a joyous celebration of a season filled with thrilling action, enduring camaraderie, and the indomitable spirit of America's pastime.

Stay abreast of the Grays' exploits and join the journey on Facebook and Instagram, as they carry the banner of historic base ball forward into new horizons.
