Grays Seek Wins at Doc Adams Festival

Recap of "Base Ball at the Beach" and a Preview of the Upcoming Doc Adams Festival

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - A sun-soaked day at Hull, Massachusetts, witnessed vintage base ball history in the making as the Providence Grays (13-4-1) squared off against their formidable rivals from Connecticut in the annual "Base Ball at the Beach" event. Though the results may not have tipped in favor of the Grays, the valiant efforts displayed by the Rhode Island nine left fans on the edge of their seats in two fiercely contested matches. Now the Providence squad makes the trek to Long Island for the Doc Adams Festival this weekend.

The 1884 opener at Hull on July 22 saw the Connecticut club striking first, swiftly amassing a 3-0 lead. Undeterred, the Grays responded with gusto, plating two aces in the third inning after Captain Brian Travers and the energetic Mike "Banquet" Swanson reached base. The duo was driven in by the reliable shortstop, Mike Duggan. However, the Connecticut team, anchored by the stellar pitching of ace Brett Berry, held the Grays in check for the following frames. Berry's masterful performance, combined with timely runs, enabled the Connecticuts to maintain their advantage. With two more aces in the third and fourth innings, they held an 8-4 lead heading into the fifth.

The Grays showed resilience in the fifth inning, tallying two aces to trim the gap. The trio of hits from "Banquet," Aidan Pirruccello-McClellan, along with a contribution from pitcher Jay Gildea, demonstrated their determination. As both teams battled back and forth, the scoreboard reflected a tense 8-6 lead for Connecticut after seven innings. Providence unleashed a spectacular offensive surge in the eighth, drawing level at 10 runs each. However, Connecticut managed to edge ahead in the ninth securing a 12-10 victory and showcasing their prowess after a Providence rally fell short in the final frame.

The afternoon matinee, played under the 1864 rules, witnessed an equally intense encounter. Grays’ left fielder Jamie Maynard's spirited performance in the second inning set the offensive tone, as he singled and subsequently crossed home plate. Despite the Grays' commendable efforts, the Connecticut club maintained a competitive edge. Providence displayed an impressive offensive display, plating runs in the middle innings and relying on the expertise of pitcher Jon "Bones" Henson and solid defense from all corners. With Providence holding a 10-7 advantage heading into the final inning, Connecticut orchestrated a dramatic late-game rally, capitalizing on ninth-inning Providence defensive moments to snatch an 11-10 victory.
