Grays Open 2023 Campaign at Rocky Point Tomorrow

At long last, the historic game returns in Rhode Island for the 2023 season as the Providence Grays host the Game Hens of Rhode Island to open the season with a derby of the Ocean State’s capital tomorrow, April 22, at Rocky Point Park in Warwick, RI.

Base ball commences at 12:30 p.m. as the two sides are slated to play an 1884/65 doubleheader at the Grays’ home field on the bay. Game one will be played by the rules of 1884 while the second leg reverts back to 1865.

The Grays are coming off a 21-17-1 campaign in 2022, their first 20-win season since the exceptional 2019 run that saw them finish 33-11.

Providence’s 2023 schedule includes 44 games from April to October with 12 at the home grounds of Rocky Point. Following tomorrow’s opener, the Grays play their next two dates at home against the Boston Union (April 30) and Portsmouth Rockinghams (May 13).

A challenging trip to upstate New York is the first road action of the season with a twin bill against the Mountain Athletic Club on May 21 in Fleischmann’s, NY. This begins a stretch of four consecutive dates outside of Rhode Island as the always anticipated Old Dutch Day against the Brooklyn Atlantics follows on June 3 on Long Island.

A day later, Providence takes on the Elizabeth Resolutes in Rahway, NJ, before a return to the state of Maine for the first time since 2019 at the Cornish Base Ball Festival on June 10.

A busy month of June continues with the Bristol Fourth of July Committee Event on the 17th with a pair of bouts against the Lisbon Tunnelmen and another showdown with the Game Hens on the 24th, this time at the Hen House in Warwick.

The July slate emphasizes quality over quantity with the Grays next playing at the renowned Gettysburg National 19th Century Base Ball Festival on July 15 and 16 where they’ll compete and comrade with base ball family from around the country. Then, on July 22, Providence plays two with the Connecticut Bulldogs for Base Ball at the Beach in Hull, MA.

August opens as it always does with the Doc Adams Base Ball Festival at the birthplace of present-day vintage base ball, Long Island’s Old Bethpage Village Restoration, on the 5th and 6th.

Providence’s prominent home event is next as the fourth annual Rocky Point Historic Base Ball Festival takes place on August 19 and 20. The Grays then conclude the month of August by welcoming the Mountain Athletic Club to New England for a doubleheader on Georges Island in Boston Harbor on the 26th.

September sees Providence travel to Pennsylvania to play Brandywine of West Chester and Diamond State of Delaware on the 9th and the Philadelphia Athletics on the 10th. On September 23, the Grays once again take the field with Lisbon in East Hampton, CT, before competing at the Cowtown Scramble in Bovina, NY on the 30th.

The long season wraps up in its usual fashion with a twin bill against the friendly rival Brooklyn Atlantics back at Rocky Point on October 14.
