Grays Take Mid-Season Momentum to Gettysburg

The Providence Grays have reached the midway point of their 25th season, currently sitting at 11-6 after earning a pair of wins in Maryland last time out. The Rising Sun BBC hosted the Weekend at the Winery on June 25-26, played on the grounds of Dove Valley Winery in Rising Sun, Maryland.

Providence opened the 1864-rules event against the hosts, falling 25-11 in a high-scoring contest. Up next was a set of familiar faces in the New York Mutuals, who the Grays defeated in comeback, walk-off fashion, 14-13. Providence finished the weekend with a 25-12 triumph over the Keystone BBC of Harrisburg as the Rhode Islanders have momentum to carry.

Mid-July annually brings the highly anticipated Gettysburg National 19th Century Base Ball Festival, which has an additional competitive element this season. A 32-team tournament bracket has been built and a champion will be crowned at Schroeder Farm. If a club loses it’s eliminated from the tournament but will then revert back to festival play for a guaranteed four games.

Four divisions have been set, each with a field of eight, featuring three rounds to determine the division champion and semifinal qualifier. Providence will compete in the Alexander Cartwright Division, taking on Lewes BBC in the round of 32 to open the weekend. A victory would mean playing the winner of Dirigo BBC of Maine vs. Flemington Neshanock.

Follow along with all of the action on the Grays’ Facebook and Instagram pages from one of the best locations in vintage base ball.
