Grays Follow Sweep of Westfield with Trip to Bovina

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The Providence Grays have opened their 2022 campaign with the best start to a season in recent memory, holding a 6-0 record after a trio of doubleheader sweeps.

Last weekend, the Grays traveled to western Massachusetts to play two against the rival Westfield Wheelmen and emerged victorious in both matches. Providence earned a 20-10 triumph in the opener, played by 1886 rules, and followed with a closer, 11-4 win in an 1864-rules matinee.

The Rhode Islanders next bring their unblemished record to Bovina Center, New York, competing in the Creamery Field Invitational. Hosted by the Bovina Dairymen on May 21-22, the Invitational features vintage base ball powers Mountain Athletic Club (M.A.C.) and the Brooklyn Atlantics, among others.

Providence takes the field tomorrow, on day two of the event, beginning with an 1864-rules duel with the host Dairymen at 1:00 p.m. Bovina sits at 1-0 on the young season and defeated the Grays in the teams’ lone meeting last year, 25-12, in Cooperstown, New York.

The Grays’ second and final outing of the excursion comes against the always strong M.A.C. squad which holds a 1-2 mark entering this weekend. Providence fell to M.A.C. in Cooperstown last year as well, 14-9.
